Am aterizat în Chicago undeva la ora 4, era deja întuneric. Dar aveam indicaţii foarte bune spre hostel. Direct cu metroul şi încă 5 minute de mers. În mare parte acesta e suspendat, astfel ajută enorm problema traficului. Deci încă din aeroport ai parte de un tur al oraşului. Pe pagina CTA‘ului poţi găsi hărţi pentru orice, de la cele comune de conexiune cu autobuze şi trenuri, la cele de noapte şi până la o hartă cu obiective turistice incluse! Fiecare linie are culoarea ei, albastru, verde, roşu, roz, portocaliu, mov şi maro, din nou, foarte uşor de folosit. Când eşti pe fugă, când ai nici două zile, ca mine, e foarte utilă. E simplu oraşul, totul perpendicular.
Holiday Jones e foarte bine localizat! Pe Division Street, o zonă plină de restaurante cu preţuri ok şi baruri de tot felul. Deseori au loc concerte de Jazz şi Rock atât în interior, cât şi în aer liber! E o zonă recomandată pentru tineret. Şi culmea, habar nu aveam până am ajuns acolo, am ales-o doar după fotografiile de prezentare. Am primit apoi un pliant cu informaţii şi mici reduceri în apropiere. Cu un mic-dejun clasic, pot să spun că am mancat aici bagel‘ul tipic nord american. Până atunci nu înţelegeam ce-i cu toată agitaţia pentru covrigii ăştia! Dar sunt ceva deosebit! Aveam cremă de brânză, dulceaţă de mere, portocale şi struguri, apoi ceai şi cafea. Nu uit cerealele şi seminţele cu lapte. De toate, pentru toate gusturile unui mic-dejun modest, dar bun. Întregul spaţiu de relaxare e realizat într-un stil modern, dar păstrează spiritul vechi. Clădirea e pe un colţ cu o stradă ce pare scoasă dintr-un film american. A nins puţin, dar cu părere de rău, nu am prins troiene de zăpadă, încât să completeze peisajul tipic.
Fan declarat al sudului, am crezut că nu o să fiu în apele mele în nord, pentru că te simţi “prea în Europa”. Oamenii-s mai reci, mai grăbiţi, dar şi mai eleganţi şi aş putea spune, inteligenţi, dar nu generalizez. Chicago era pe lista de oraşe mari din US ce trebuie văzute măcar o dată, deci asta m-a adus aici. Ca să-mi fie totul mai uşor, am cumpărat un Chicago Pass pentru admisie rapidă şi un mic discount. Până la urmă l-am folosit pentru orientare în spaţiu, deoarece are şi o hartă inclusă. Fiind sezonul luminiţelor de Crăciun aveam pe listă câteva locuri special amenajate, printre care şi o piaţă cu specific nemţesc.
Ajung, primesc o cameră de 4 persoane, dar am doar o colegă. Paturi suprapuse, cu foarte mult spaţiu de persoană, fiind o casă veche, aveam şi ferestre uriaşe. Baia este modern amenajată. M-am grăbit cât am putut dar era deja 6 PM, probabil închis la Lincoln Parc Zoo dar totuşi întreb la recepţie pentru direcţii. Erau încă în construcţie băieţii. Amenajau împreună zona de la intrare. Unul din ei se oferă să mă ducă până acolo, well, why not? Aş putea să vă povestesc ce maşină scumpă avea, dar la cum le ştiu eu, vă spun că era foarte curată. Şi mergem mult, mai bine de 30 minute, îmi tot explica el cum vreau să merg în celălălt capăt al oraşului la ora asta. Ajungem. Îmi spune să urmăresc parcul până se termină şi dau în North Ave şi să continui pe Clark Street. Era zis şi făcut dacă nu începea să ningă viscolit. La Zoo nu am mai văzut animăluţe, doar decoraţiuni de iarnă. Eu m-am înţeles pe mine cât m-am înţeles, că mă plimbam pe marginea parcului Lincoln pe furtuna ce era, dar pe cei ce alergau atunci, nu. Adică îţi îngheţa şi sufletul!
Încet, încet, las în urmă zona Old Town Triangle, urc într-un autobuz şi ajung pe Michigan Avenue. Aveam card Ventra pentru transport pe 3 zile cu orice mijloc existent. Intru pe colţul cu boaba de fasole din Millennium Park şi rămân uimită cât de frumos se reflectă skyline’ul în ea. Da, da, şi eu. Mai privesc puţin patinatorii şi mă-ndrept spre târgul de Crăciun cu specific nemţesc. A avut decoraţiuni frumoase, cârnăciori şi vin, altfel, orice piaţă de Crăciun din Europa îi întrece cu mult! Mă întorc, aceeaşi atmosferă primitoare la hostel.
Pe geamul camerei observ câţiva fulgi plutind, apoi un vânt puternic bate în crengile copacilor. Concluzia zilei? Ger. Ies înfofolită pe cât posibil şi dau cu nasul direct de Starbucks’ul din faţa hostelului, amintesc asta în cazul în care avem împătimiţi ai aromelor lor.
Cu metroul din Division St merg până în Wells de unde-mi încep plimbarea de 12 ore. O recomand cu drag! Poţi folosi water taxi pentru distanţe mari, sau poţi închiria o bicicletă.
Mie mi-a plăcut cel mai mult să trec podurile peste râul Chicago. Priveliştea e superbă!
Am continuat cu priveliştea din geamul de sticlă, skydeck’ul din Willis Tower. Dacă ai o problemă cu “statul în nori” şi cu “pământul care-ţi fuge de sub picioare” probabil o să păstrezi distanţa faţă de locul cu pricina. I loved it!
Puţin mai încolo pe Jackson Bvd dai de The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Acum, cu cât te adânceşti în tărâmul verde (vorbesc despre parcuri dacă nu te-ai prins), vezi monumentele din Millennium Park, simbolul oraşului vântului, The Bean(Cloud Gate), Crown Fountain; ajungi şi la Insitutul de Artă.
Făra să-mi dau seama cum au trecut 3 ore mă aflu în Grant Park! Dacă nu te grăbeşti, aşa cum fac eu mereu, poţi petrece o zi întreagă în zona: Shedd Aquarium, The Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, însă îţi ajunge şi câte o oră în fiecare.
Pe la 4 m-am întors în nord cu un autobuz şi un metrou la 360 Chicago – Hancock Observatory. Nu am putut rata un carnaval în spiritul Crăciunului, deci am ajuns fuguţa şi în Navy Pier unde copii îşi aşteptau cadourile de la moşul. Portul e romantic şi e cel mai bun punct de observaţie al skyline’ului.
Şi acum! Mergem la mall, la Water Tower Place! Da, după 9 ore de activităţi turistice încă mai am chef de shopping. Super seară!
Ah, era să uit de semnul acesta! Lovely, right?
Dacă exista vreo metodă să păstrez şi mirosul de brad în fotografia de mai sus! Vai de mine, nu ştiţi ce aţi pierdut!
În concluzie, am fost turistul clasic, cu hartă, card cu reduceri şi intrări rapide la obiective turistice şi nu-s prea mândră de mine. Puţin am ajuns în cartierele simple, sau în supermarketuri, acolo e mereu altceva decât în zona centrală sau în aria turistică. Dar nu-i cu supărare, că mai mergem!

I landed in Chicago at 4, it was already dark. But I had good hostel directions this time. Straight to the metro, a 5 minutes walk and I was there. Mostly above the roads, the metro lines are on suspended tracks, so you get a city tour as soon as you leave the airport. On CTA‘s web page you can find maps for anything, from the common bus-train connections, to the night schedules and maps with touristic points of interest! Every line has a color: blue, green, red, pink, orange, purple and brown, again, making it easier to use the system. The city is easy to understand, most streets are perpendicular, but when you’re on the run, as I was, those maps come in handy.
Holiday Jones it’s really well located! On Division Street, in a restaurants and bars area with some very good prices on the menu. Often they have Jazz and Rock indoor and on the street concerts. A recommended neighborhood for young people. And I had no idea about any of these till I got there, I chose it only for the interior pictures and some reviews. Classical breakfast, so I finally had an American bagel! Yaaammyyy, had no idea it was so good! Then we had cream cheese, oranges and grapes jam, tea, coffee, cereals, seeds and milk. For a modest meal, it’s pretty decent, right? The space is relaxing, chill, modern, but with the retro vibe in it. The building is an old one, on the corner of a typical Chicago street, like the ones we see in the movies. I had some snowflakes flying around, but not the famous snowstorms, maybe, next time.
Declared fan of the South, I thought I won’t have a good time in the North, because if feels like Europe. People are colder, always on the run and so elegant and smarter. Chicago was on my “big cities to see list” so there I was. To make all things easier I bought a Chicago Pass for early admission and a small discount. After all, I’ve used it for the map included. Being in the holiday season I wanted to go to a Christmas Market, too.
I get there, I am checked in a room of 4, but only with a roommate. Large bunk beds in a spacious room. Being an old house, it has large windows too. A modern bathroom. I was in a hurry to go to Lincoln Park Zoo. Asking the boys at the reception for directions, got me a ride there. Maybe I should tell you now how awesome and expensive his car was, but I won’t. We drove for half an hour because it was pretty far, he gave some tips and directions on the way. I was going to walk along the park to North Ave, then on Clark Street. No animals to see in the zoo because it was closed, I got only to the season lights. It started snowing while it already was so windy. And on this weather people were jogging! I was frozen but it looks like they were in a great shape!
I leave behind the Old Town Triangle, take a bus to Michigan Avenue using my 3 days Ventra card. I enter the park on the bean side and I stop stunned by the skyline’s reflection. It’s peaceful and romantic. Feel free to ice skate now! Later, the Dutch Christmas Market did not impress me much, they had traditional food, spicy sausages, hot wine and chocolate, little stands with decorations, but any other market in Europe is way better. Sleep time!
I wake up to a cold day again, windy and there are some snowflakes, too. For the Starbucks fans I have some great news! There’s one right in front of the hostel and you can smell it from the street! A good start for a 12 hours walk. I take the metro from Division St to Wells. You can also use the water taxi or rent a bike.
I love bridges, the tiny ones in a city, so I recommend the ones along the Chicago river. I went in circles for one hour, I think. Afterwards I went to the glass room, the sky-deck in Willis Tower. If you have a heights problem, you might want to stay away from this one. I loved it!
This guy here represents the police force or something … he’s so cute and funny!
Keep walking and on the same side you’ll see The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. About time for some nature moments! I walk all Millennium Park where I see the symbol of the wind city, The Bean, also know as the Cloud Gate, and the Crown Fountain. Somewhere in the middle is the Art Institute.
Time flies when you have so much to see! I spent about 3 hours in Grant Park. If you’re not in a hurry, you can give an extra day to the following: Shedd Aquarium, The Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, a lot to see and a lovely place to go with your family.
By twilight I headed north by bus and metro, to the 360 Chicago – Hancock Observatory. It offers a better view than Willis Tower, but the butterflies appear only on the skydeck. It was dark but I could not miss a Christmas Carnival in Navy Pier. Kids were either in line for the presents list with Santa, either ice skating. There was a concert, too. But I walked outside where I really missed having someone, too romantic. Right?!
What now? Ah, shopping? At the Water Tower Place! Of course I am in the mood for it even after 9 hours of sightseeing!

Not too proud of my visit, or story. I was the typical tourist, with the map and city tour card, main attractions, museums. Very little “incursions” in the locals neighborhoods or markets! But hey, lots to do next time!
