Prima ţară: SUA

Primul oraş: New York

Voi încerca să povestesc cum am ajuns acolo, voi aduce o idee a costurilor, apoi, o lungă poveste, după cum mi-e obiceiul, bineînţeles.

În excursia asta am învăţat cum să folosesc aparatul nou cumpărat. Dar cel mai important, am învăţat cum să găsesc persoanele potrivite care să imortalizeze momentele altfel, poate uitate.

Pe scurt, am învăţat că e uşor să spui:

Hi, please can you?

La ce te gândeşti când vrei să mergi în New York la finalul verii de work&travel în SUA? La Philadelphia, Washington, Boston şi Niagara. Având o săptămână la dispoziţie am ales un zbor din Fort Walton, Florida spre New York, 120$ dus-întors.

Am aterizat la 3PM, până am luat bagajul, apoi air trainul de la JFK şi metroul spre Port Authority deja era 4 şi un pic. Un ticket pentru aeroport era 5$ şi un 3 days pass era 30$, în decembrie 2014 cred că tot atât costau, iar astea ajung, nu mai ai nevoie de alt mijloc de transport, poţi sta oriunde în apropiere de Manhattan. Nu merită o noapte în Times Square la hotel, într-o camera de 3×3 m, cu minim 100$( spun din experienţă). Bine, dacă găseşti rooftop apartment pe airbnb, la un preţ puţin mai redus, be my guest, merită priveliştea şi condiţiile.

Stabilisem să mă întâlnesc cu domnul profesor de fizică din liceu( care periodic locuieşte acolo, sau acum, cred, permanent). Urmărind indicaţile cu street şi avenue, care-s perpendiculare, pe străzi e mai scurt să mergi de la una la cealaltă iar dacă eşti în direcţia greşită imediat iţi dai seama, main idea, nu poţi să te pierzi în Manhattan! Or so they say, practic m-am pierdut de 2 ori la metrou, o dată în Central Parc, o dată în zona Wall Street. Tare drag mi-a fost proful! Şi tuturor, zic eu. Când vedem o vacă imposibil să nu ne gândim la fizică – inside story here. Mi-a adus nişte foi cu ce e de vizitat, cu ce metrou să merg, unde să mănânc, chiar mi-au fost de folos. Dacă nu greşesc, mi-a şi ţinut un bagaj până aveam să mă întorc din Washington. Nu ştiam eu atunci cum e cu spaţiul de bagaje din terminalele de bus, care există peste tot, la un cost între 5 şi 10 dolari pe zi, depinde de oraş.

Ploua, dar am rămas la plimbare în seara respectivă. Bryant Park(6th ave with 42nd st) era tare frumos! Îmi mai amintesc de un fular pe care l-am cumpărat cu 5$, altfel şi îngheţam. Apoi îmi amintesc şi cum în terminalul autocarelor a intrat un tip de culoare în vorbă cu mine. Ce fac, unde merg, de unde sunt, întrebările comune. Am răspuns ca o fetiţă cuminte ce sunt! Nu te mănâncă nimeni dacă schimbi două vorbe… şi nu e ca şi cum are ce să-ţi facă într-o sală de aşteptare unde mai sunt încă vreo 10 persoane. Bine, dacă-mi pun imaginaţia la contribuţie, are ce să-ţi facă, but let’s be positive!

După cum se poate observa nu am vreo problemă cu drumuri de 4-8 ore în autocar sau zboruri de peste 6 ore. Le ador! Adorm în ce poziţie mă pui! Că mă dor toate când mă ridic e altă poveste, dar trece repede, adică după celelalte 8 ore de plimbat prin oraş. Cam asta se întâmplă dacă vrei să călătoreşti cu mine! Nu există “mă dor picioarele”.

Fără a bagă în seamă criticile la adresa companiei, cu precădere pentru siguranţa oferită, am ales Greyhoundul până în Washington, la 1AM pleca din NY şi ajungeam la răsărit în Washington, unde am petrecut o zi, seara întorcându-mă la NY. Acum văd că nu găseşti sub 100$, dar pe vremea aia era mai ieftin.

În Washington autocarul opreşte destul de aproape de zona monumentelor şi muzeelor. Cam 30 de minute până acolo. Treci de gară, de un parc drăguţ, ajungi la: U.S. Capitol, National World War II Memorial, Washington Monument, Smithsonian Institution Building, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool şi White House.

Ce regret aici e că nu am stat să vad oraşul la propriu, am văzut doar zona turistică, puţinul ce l-am parcurs a fost până la staţia de retur. Mi s-a părut un oraş cu oameni eleganţi, sportivi, un oraş verde, curat, unde respirai un aer de Europa şi unde veveriţele erau la număr precum câinii fără stăpân de la noi, poate mai multe.

Tot aşa am ales un tur pentru cascada Niagara cu Tours4Fun, la 60$, cu plecare dimineaţa din Chinatown, NY, am ajuns acolo puţin înainte de apus, iar peste noapte am rămas la un hotel de 3* cred, Holiday Inn, feels damn good să-mi amintesc exact după 3 ani şi multe nopţi dormite în atâtea camere de hotel/hostel!

Dimineaţa următoare aveam un tur cu vaporul sub cascadă, în traducere liberă, un duş rece la 10 AM, în octombrie, la 10 grade. Merită experienţa, dar la următoarea când ajungi, you’re gonna be good cu privitul de sus, te stropeşte suficient, cascada Iguazu mi-e martoră.

Ajungem la o cetate în care m-am simţit ca acasă, în Alba Iulia.

Ne-am mai oprit la o fabrică de sticlă, urmată de o plimbare pe o vale drăguţă şi în final cândva noaptea ne-am întors.

Singura dată când am căutat parteneri de cameră la hotel. Se pare că există opţiune dacă eşti single traveler să cauţi pe forumul companiei încă o persoană sau două, pentru a-ţi reduce costul călătoriei, având încă oferta activă de 2+1 gratis. Am găsit un cuplu de undeva din Balcani, i-am cunoscut dimineaţa, în faţa busului, ne-a redus cu vreo 30$ costul fiecăruia. Ghidul a fost tare simpatic, un chinez, born and raised in the USA, deci doar aspectul îl trăda, altfel, accentul, 100% de New Yorker. Am uitat să precizez că ăştia-s chinezi, deci turul e în engleză şi chineză. Drept urmare mai bine de jumătate din pasageri erau chinezi, câţiva indieni, apoi noi. Am fost singura fără partener, în mijlocul cuplurilor de vârsta părinţilor mei, clar că toţi îmi purtau de grijă să nu mă pierd şi să-mi facă poze. Tot mai mult îmi place singură în explorare, dar aş repeta experienţa turului organizat.

Înapoi în NY iau metroul până în Queens la hostelul meu de suflet, pe care l-am recomandat cu drag oricui. Ca un turist veritabil ce eram, cumpărasem şi NY Pass, la 100$, pentru intrări reduse la: Empire State Building Experience, Top of the Rock Observation Deck, Guggenheim Museum, Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, Broadway shows, Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises, 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, American Museum of Natural History, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Madame Tussauds New York. 

Nu vă imaginaţi ce plan aveam, ca de obicei. Zi, oră, loc. Program fix. Prima dimineaţă, deschid ochii, ceaţă, no sigur văd acum Statuia Libertăţii de n-ai tu treabă! Clar că am întors ordinea pe dos, iar ceaţa nu a plecat niciunde deci am avut un New York romantic timp de 3 zile, doar aşa înainte de plecare şi-a făcut şi soarele simţită prezenţa. Va urma …

This past few days I had my mind on my first trip alone. So I’ll do my best and remember how I got to New York in 2012 and give you a cost input with a long story, same as the old ones.

In this trip I learned how to take pictures alone, well, actually, how to use my camera, brand new at the time. But the most important, I learned how to find the right people to take my pictures, capturing moments, otherwise forgotten. Long story short, I know now how to say:

Hi, please can you?

What comes first to mind when you want to visit New York by the end of the summer of work&travel? Philadelphia, Washington, Boston and Niagara. I had a week, so I went for a flight from Fort Walton, Florida to NY, 120$ round trip. I landed at 3PM, till I got my luggage, then the air train from JFK and subway to Port Authority it was already late 4. A ticket to the airport is 5$ and a 3 days pass for the subway was 30$ back then and in December last year, too. You can stay anywhere close to Manhattan with this access to public transportation. It’s not worth it a night in Times Square in a hotel, in a room of 3 by 3, at a minimum of 100$, I know it for a fact! Ok, if you find a rooftop apartment on airbnb, be my guest, it’s worth the view and the conditions.

I’ve agreed to meet with my physics teacher from high school( he lives there now). Following the directions by street and avenue which are perpendicular, then considering the fact that on streets it takes you less to walk from one to another and if you’re headed in the wrong way you’ll figure it out in 2 minutes, you get to the main idea, it’s impossible to get lost in Manhattan! Or so they say, because I got lost twice in the subway, once in Central Park and once on Wall Street. I liked this teacher, he’s a very nice person, anytime I see a cow I think of him(inside story here). He brought me a few papers with instructions of what to visit, what subway to take where, where to eat and a few others. Very helpful actually! If I’m not wrong, he also kept a bag of mine for a day, because I was going to Washington for about 24h. I was young and innocent back then, I didn’t know about the luggage storage at the big train or bus station, it is very cheap, around 6$ a day.

It was raining but I stayed out walking in Bryant Park, on 6th with 42nd. I remember a scarf I bought with 5$, I was frozen, it was so so cold. Then I remember a guy who started talking to me in the bus waiting area. What do I do, where am I going, where am I from, just the regular. I answer like the good girl I am. Nobody is doing anything to you if you’re just nice and make small talk. It’s not like he could have done something to me in a room with 10 other people. Well, if I think it over, yes, he could have, but let’s be positive.

As you may see I don’t mind a 4-8 hour bus road trip or flights longer than 6 hours. I just love it. I can sleep anywhere. Yes, everything hurts when I get up, but it wears off pretty soon, like after the other 8 hours of walking through the city!? That’s how a day in a trip of mine looks like. The line “my feet hurt” does not exist in my vocabulary.

Ignoring the critics for the company, concerning safety, I chose Grayhound to Washington, at 1AM it was leaving NY and by sunrise we were there. I spent the day returning by twilight. I can see now it’s expensive, like 100$, but back then, it was cheaper. In Washington the bus stops very close to the monuments and museums area. In about 30 minutes tops you’re there. You leave behind the train station, a cute park, then you’ll see: The U.S. Capitol, The National World War II Memorial, Washington Monument, The Smithsonian Institution Building, The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool and the White House.

I left one regret here, I didn’t see the city, just the touristic area. I found it as one with elegant people, sport addicts, a green city, clean, where you can breath fresh European air and where the squirrels are as many as the dogs with no owner on the streets here.

For the Niagara Falls I chose a tour with Tours4Fun, at 60$, leaving early in the morning from Chinatown, NY, getting there a little before sunset. Overnight we stayed at Holiday Inn, I have to say, it feels damn good to know that after 3 years of so many nights in other places!

In the next morning we had a boat tour under the waterfall, or let me rephrase that, a cold 10 AM shower in October, at a maximum of 10 degrees. It’s worth the experience, but it’s a once in a lifetime thing, you’re good with watching from above at the next one. Or so I did while at the Iguazu Falls.

Then we made it to a fortress, with too many common points with the one in my hometown, Alba Iulia.

Our last stops were a glass factory, amazing and expensive stuff there, and a valley. Finally at night, we got back.

This was the only time I looked online for someone to share a hotel room with. Let me explain. So, this company has a deal 2+1 free, so on their forum you can talk to others like you, or couples, same as the one I found, who are willing to share the room with someone they did not know before. They were from a country in the Balcanic Peninsula, also with Work&Travel, whom I just met in front of the bus that morning, it saved us 30$ each. Sometimes it makes a difference. So it’s something you can look into, maybe for more expensive trips.

The guide was really funny and cool, a Chinese born and raised in the USA, so with a 100% New York accent, only the looks gave him up. Yeah, forgot to mention. This company is Chinese. So you get a Chinese guide and a English speaker one. So as you can imagine, more than half of the pasangers were from China, some Hindu, then us. Of course I was the only single one so everyone at my parents age just looked after me and took photos too. I love traveling alone, but I could repeat the experience sometime. It’s nice too. If you’re not always in a rush.

Back in NY I took the subway to Queens, at my favorite hostel, which I always recommend. As a true tourist at the time I bought in advance a 3 days NY Pass, at about 100$, with discounted or free entrances at(check the website for the complete offer): Empire State Building Experience, Top of the Rock Observation Deck, Guggenheim Museum, Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, Broadway shows, Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises, 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, American Museum of Natural History, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Madame Tussauds New York.

You can’t imagine how my itinerary looked like at first! So complicated as usual. I had plans scheduled to happen at exact hours. For example, I had the Statue of Liberty first thing in the morning, guess what, it was so foggy you couldn’t see a thing 5 meters in front of you. So everything turned upside down. Did I mention I got a sunny day? My last day, other than that, just fog. But it was amazing! Everything fell into place after all.
